The science behind sound healing…

You may have heard me describe myself as not being very academic.

The fact is, I don’t always need loads of facts to know when something is good for me (or not).

Plus, I sometimes can’t retain the same amount of information that other people can.

Usually, I am guided by my intuition and instinctively know when something is meant for me.

That’s not the case for everyone, and if you’re the kind of person that needs a bit of proof before they try something, the following information about the science of sound healing is for you.

Brainwaves & Deep Rest

Sound healing works by influencing brainwave states. As you listen to soothing tones, your brain can shift from a busy beta state (alert, focused) into slower waves like alpha (relaxed) or even theta (meditative, dreamlike). This is similar to the restorative state experienced in deep meditation or just before sleep.

Nervous System Regulation

The vibrations and tones used in sound baths activate the parasympathetic nervous system - the part of the body responsible for 'rest and digest.' This helps reduce cortisol (the stress hormone), lower heart rate and blood pressure, and create a state of internal calm.

Resonance & Cellular Response

Every part of our body has a natural frequency. Sound waves travel through the body faster than through air, and certain frequencies can support cellular relaxation, helping release tension and encourage physical and emotional balance.

Benefits of soundbaths or sound healing sessions

Improves focus and clarity, supporting mental resilience
Promotes emotional regulation, helping people to respond rather than react
Encourages rest and restoration, reducing burnout and fatigue
Supports sleep and energy - even a short session can feel like a deep rest
Accessible to everyone - no special clothing, or prior experience needed

Try it - you might like it. If this has piqued your interest, or you’ve been wondering about a soundbath or soundhealing for a while, you can find several different soundbath sessions at my studio in Leeds here.
